Rail to Trail - Godalming to Guildford
Details
This walk of 5 miles is spectacular in both directions. I chose to do it from Godalming station having taken a train through Guildford. The cost of my journey (with a railcard) was £7.10!
There are 3 trains an hour Monday to Saturday and two an hour on Sunday.
There are buses (No 46 Stagecoach) running all the week except Sundays.
There is not a hill in sight!
Directions from and to the stations are all below.
A few wildlife highlights
In the summer, I found so many flowers. They are pictured above and included Hemp Agrimony, Goats Rue,Tufted vetch
Bindweed, White Campion and Hedgerow Crane's bill. Ragwort was covered in Cinnabar moth caterpillars.
Amongst the butterflies, were Meadow brown, Gatekeeper, Green-veined White, Comma, Holly Blue and Red Admiral.
There were dragonflies, Emperors and also Beautiful demoiselles and Banded demoiselles.
Leave Godalming station via the steps with the orange railings to the left of the bike storage area. Go to the entrance of the car park, turn left and look for the footpath on the right-hand side just after The Rectory. At the end of the path, cross the road, keeping very slightly left and join the footpath through the park. The river Wey and its water meadows are on your left. You will pass a meadow to your right has been left to allow wild flowers to grow. In July this is covered in meadowsweet flowers. The path along the riverside has many huge and beautiful willow trees.
Keep going until you meet the road. Turn left over the bridge crossing to the other side and turn immediately right before the church buildings to rejoin the riverside path, now on the left of the river/canal. You have a choice here of taking the path through the meadows to the left (best in summertime) or continuing on the canal path. The meadows are full of wildlife, flowers, birds, butterflies and insects but will often flood in the winter months. As long as you stay on the meadow paths you will eventually rejoin the Canal bank (after crossing straight over one road).
This one Canal path will now take you all the way to the centre of Guildford. Cross straight over all roads and bridges that you come to. The photo album on this page shows some of the wildlife and scenery you will enjoy on the way. Locks, bridges and even a wartime pillbox.
At Guildford you will know you're there, continue straight and then up and over the steep footbridge. Turn left along the road, then left then passing to the left of the Yvonne Arnaud theatre and follow the path and road around to the right. Keeping the canal on your right hand side pass pubs and the car park on your left and go under the road bridge. When you see the Electricity Works 1913 on the right of the canal, turn left up the steps. Across the road, you will see Guildford station, so drop down to the underpass and up to the station entrance. A great walk!
